WASHINGTON, DC, 10. December 2099 – The White House has just confirmed reports that a new, inhabitable planet has been found on the outer rim of the Milky Way Galaxy and that it contains what appears to be at least one set of intelligent life forms.

In a prepared statement, White House Representative Alice Gregg explained that while they are officially declaring this new area of the galaxy as inhabited, there are no immediate plans for any type of communication.

“There are many factors to consider on the subject of initiating communication,” Gregg said. “We still have a lot of work to do before we feel comfortable taking that step.”

Gregg did not take questions after her brief news conference, leaving the reports in the press room, and the whole world for that matter, searching for answers. Almost immediately, pictures of the supposed new planet began circulating in various forms via the internet, though each has been universally denied by authorities.

“Any picture claiming to be authentic is purely fabricated,” Gregg said. “We have not established visual contact at this time, nor do we know when or if that will happen.”

While news of this discovery has brought widespread excitement, experts are urging everyone to remain calm. Alejandro Jimenez, a noted extra-terrestrial author and scientist from the University of Miami, believes that this is only the beginning.

“The next few months will be critical,” Jiminez said. “The US government needs to be extremely careful how they handle any contact. Right now, we know nothing about how they operate, and offending them out of ignorance would be a tragic mistake.”

The National Guard has also been called in by many states in an effort to help deal with what is sure to be forthcoming panic. Many states have already declared emergencies while urging their residents to remain calm as reports of grocery store looting and other theft and vandalism begin to pour in as a response to the news.

“We are also urging the citizens of the United States to remain calm,” Gregg said. “As of now, we have no reason to believe that any hostility is forthcoming.”

Of course, this new discovery begs several questions. If true, has this planet discovered our existence here on Earth? If so, what are their intentions? In any case, Jimenez belives the best course of action is simply to wait.

“As hard as it may be, we’re better off continuing to live our lives as normal until we gain a better understanding of what, if anything, they might want from us.”
