The San Francisco Bay Area continues to steer experimental music and collaborative art practice together down a curious path, creating a buzz (clicks and beeps) as it goes. One of the hot projects in the Bay, ‘CMT creates: music’, is now reaching out worldwide to work with digital musicians through their CALL to Artists (www.timjohnphillips.com/recordings).
‘CMT creates: music’ is a Do It Together style of music project. For the past two years, a growing collective of sound obsessed artists have been working on inventing, building and performing experimental musical instruments, one for every $500 donated to their favorite charity. After a run of festivals, the group dragged their voluminous creations to the recording studio and put together a library of recordings. Their website now encourages electronic musicians to sample the recordings and create new pieces of music with them, while mixing in their own creative sounds and beats.
This is an interesting project because of how it fluctuates between reaching far and wide for creative input, and then pulling it all back to a local concentration, then reaching out again… This is obviously a ‘reaching out’ phase of the cycle, and I encourage any one who is interested in working with unusual samples to get involved, as ‘CMT creates: music’ will no doubt offer rewarding connections as the collaboration unfolds.
