The world-renowned band, U2 recently announced dates and venues for its upcoming “iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour.“ As of right now, the tour kicks off on May 14, 2015 at the BC Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

What is perhaps most surprising is that for the first time in over a decade the Irish superstar band, well known for its elaborate stadium shows with spectacular audio and visual effects, will be playing in indoor arenas.

While there are no confirmed dates in Ireland as of yet, a spokesperson has stated there will be shows scheduled for Dublin. These additional shows will most likely take place at the end of next year and will be a part of a special project on which the band is working.

According to U2 band member, the Edge, this tour will not be nearly as big as their previous tour during which they put on a total of 110 shows. Bono has said they are hoping to play more indoor venues this time around. The tour is being planned in conjunction with their album, “Songs of Innocence.” Besides Vancouver, shows will be taking place in 18 other cities hosting back-to-back shows. Some of the other cities and venues include:

San Jose, CA SAP Center

Phoenix, AZ US Airways Center

Chicago, IL United Center

Toronto, ON Air Canada Center

Boston, MA TD Garden

Turin, Italy Pala Alpitour

Stockholm, Sweden Globe

Berlin, Germany O2 World

Barcelona, Spain Palau Sant Jordi

Paris, France Bercy

The band will also be doing four back-to-back shows in Los Angeles, New York City and London. U2’s Innocence-Experience Tour 2015 tickets go on sale December 8th and 9th.

In the days leading up to the Sonar Festival’s 20th anniversary, most people had some expectations of what they might experience. They planned on partying, good drinks, meeting new people and, most importantly, getting a chance to see some of the most exciting new performers in electronic music alongside the legends who helped to pioneer the genre. But even the most seasoned veterans of the epic Barcelona festival quickly learned to leave their expectations at the door.

Sonar 2013 was unlike anything that anyone could have imagined. Much more than just a four-day party, this year’s Sonar festival proved to be something that many in the electronic music scene spend years trying to find: an unforgettable experience.

The first day at Sonar 2013 kicked off with the beginning of the Sonar by Day lineup. The festival is divided into two main categories: Sonar by Day and Sonar by Night.

TGES got things off to a great start with the first slot of the day at the SonarVillage. TGES brought their crazy, eclectic blend of styles in full force. By mixing live instrumentation with sampled sounds, they had the crowd hypnotized. They keyed up samples of vintage vinyl recordings and ambient sounds from field recordings and melded the results with live instruments. The on-the-spot mixes carried the crowd through an incredible improvisational sonic landscape.

Later that day, UK composer and producer Gold Panda touched off his own incendiary live set. His style, which features a deceptively simple approach, fell right into line with the spirit of the Sonar Festival. Rather than focusing strictly on EDM, Sonar showcases a broad range of styles, from ambient down-tempo to nonstop party beats. Gold Panda brought his unique mixture of straightforward beats and lush, organic tones to bear at the Sonar Village showcase and the audience loved every second of it.

Without question, the star attraction of the second day of Sonar 2013 was the Kraftwerk 3D show at Sonar Club. Kraftwerk are legends in the music world because of their part in creating the electronic styles that were the precedent for all the performers of the day. Their seminal 1974 recording “Autobahn” brought vocoders, analogue synthesizers and live performance art to the masses. Over a career spanning four decades, Kraftwerk have always been at the forefront of the evolution of electronic music.

Their live 3D show was mind-blowing. It combined the best of their recordings with the modern technology that brought their sound to new life. Behind their 3D glasses, the audience was breathless as they took in the scintillating graphics and lights that pulsed to the synthesizer hooks and rhythmic beats. Sonar 2013 brought in visitors from over 90 countries and it’s a safe bet that the Kraftwerk 3D show had adoring fans from all over the globe that night.

Nicolas Jaar – Encore

Nicolas Jaar also took the stage over at the Sonar Lab performance area. The US artist has risen to prominence as a leader in the global music scene. Glowing reviews from music critics propelled Nicolas Jaar to a top spot on Resident Advisor’s list of the best live shows of the year. The close, technical atmosphere of the Sonar Lab space was a perfect fit for Jaar’s set. His minimal techno sound pulsed at 100 BPM and his on-the-fly vocal collages added texture and depth to the groove. The crowd was enthusiastic and showed their love.

The third day of Sonar 2013 was the culmination of excitement that had been growing since attendees first arrived. At 5 PM, over at the Sonar Pub area, Laurent Garnier closed out a thumping DJ set to a packed house. Garnier is a familiar face at Sonar. He spun tracks at the first Sonar festival 20 years ago and his mixes have only gotten better over the years. Garnier is world-renowned and is widely regarded as one of the most consistently excellent performers working today. His thrilling set included tracks from Klaus Nomi, Jeff Mills and Emmanuel Topp. Even though many in the audience were tired from a long day of dancing and partying at the Sonar Pub, they quickly found new energy as Laurent took the stage, rocking and grooving to the exquisite music selection.

At the same time as Laurent Garnier’s set, Chilean DJ Luciano was kicking things off over at the Sonar Club stage. Well-known and respected as a prime proprietor of microhouse and minimal styles, Luciano was also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the creation of his personal label, Cadenza. He spared no effort in his performance and the crowd quickly matched his energy and enthusiastic style. His set was all about solid grooves, with a no-frills approach that still left room for embellishments and his own artistic flair. As his set drew to a close, the crowd was left wanting more and they had instantly become addicted to this DJ’s unmatched style.

These two DJ sets had created a massive, exciting tone for the evening and that spirit was continued at the Sonar Lab when American DJ Seth Troxler kicked off his set. Troxler is a native of the birthplace of the techno sound: the clubs of Detroit. Seth was named the number one DJ on Resident Advisor’s 2012 list and the audience at Sonar Lab quickly learned why he won that acclaimed spot. His set featured his trademark style, which encompasses influences from classic to modern. The tracks he selected showcased his respect for all forms of dance music and the result was a set that had something for everyone.

Sonar by Night was closed off that night by a live performance from UK group Hot Natured. Their full-length show was an amazing display of their unparalleled songwriting abilities. They are set to release their new album and the crowd showed off their appreciation and anticipation for the new songs. There really was no better way to mark the closing of this legendary festival than the high-energy, anthemic sounds of Hot Natured.

All in all, the 20th anniversary of Sonar was an event to remember. Veterans of the festival and newcomers alike were enthralled from beginning to end. There was truly a sound for every taste, and no one left disappointed. Sonar is set to launch a festival in the US and and the Sonar creators are excited to announce new dates and locations in the coming year. For anyone who missed this year’s incredible performances, there is no reason to worry, as by all indications, Sonar is ready to grow, expand and it’s definitely one of the best festivals for electronic music in the world.

Many thanks to mr. Ivan Vilovski

They might talk about Mick Jagger and his unmistakable voice or the iconic lip and tongue logo synonymous with all things Rolling Stones or they might break out with the chorus of Satisfaction (which goes a bit like this… I can’t get no…. satisfaction….).

Ever since the band formed in 1962 in London, they have been belting out classic rock and roll songs that have defined a generation. Their musical repertoire has covered rhythm and blues and the hits just keep coming.

Whatever it is – the sheer greatness of The Rolling Stones is hard to deny. They came in 4th on the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list published by Rolling Stone Magazine and they’re still going strong. That’s right, they are back on the scene to celebrate 50 years of rock music history.

50 years is a long time to be playing as a band and they are as electric as ever. Don’t miss out on seeing 4 legends of rock come together as one yet again to deliver an unforgettable performance.

The Rolling Stones will be playing The O2 Arena in London on Sunday 25 November 2012 and there’s no doubt tickets will sell out fast. Avoid disappointment, book your Rolling Stones London tickets now!

St. John’s, NL, Canada: “I’m the head robot’s daughter.” These are the words of the young girl in a black skirt and Justin Bieber t-shirt who greets me at the door to the house where about sixteen people have gathered to be a part of improvisational electronica band Robot Scout’s RPM (Record Production Month) recording project.

The band plays in their socks to an audience surrounded by finger foods that range from mango slices to orange ginger chocolate. The house studio used to be a trunk factory, and two of the original wooden pillars support the ceiling.

Robot Scout is Chris Driedzic on drums and percussion (including some fun toys like a tin whistle and mbira, or thumb piano), Greg Bruce on winds, Jason Hayward on keys and laptop, and Rick Bailey on bass. All of them are dressed in Boy Scout shirts.

As they play their assortment of grooves and sounds, they sometimes exchange long looks like lovers, but it’s not each other they’re in love with. They’re in love with the music they are creating.

Many of their tracks start off with more widely accessible sounds and rhythms and then slowly draw you into a new dimension filled with unpredictability.

“Sometimes when we’re improvising, the track takes on a life of its own and we don’t really know when it’s going to end,” says Hayward after a particularly strong track. “But that was great. That worked out really well.”

You can almost see their ears twitching as they fine-tune their playing to one another’s improvisations. All at once, they switch musical directions, as if they are communicating by ESP. Their individual and collective musical skill lets them follow the track wherever it takes them, which leads to some very original progressions and movement in each tune.

For example, their second last track of the night starts off with what sounds like whale song from Hayward’s keyboard and Bruce’s saxophone, and then switches over to feature Driedzic’s demonic laughter distorted through the mic.

The fifth track they play evolves from an off-kilter uneasiness of the kind you might feel if you saw an attractive stranger walking naked down a dark, empty street. From there, it becomes a run in the summer evening sun before eventually settling into mellow contemplation reminiscent of petals floating on a cloudy lake.

Bailey explains the trajectory of the band that got it to where it is today: “Me and Chris started when we first met, so maybe like 2009. We were going by the name Neighbourhood Watch, then we thought we’d shorten it to N/W, you know, make it all cryptic for people. That didn’t really work out. So then we figured we were doing kind of new and exploratory stuff, so Robot Scout seemed to fit. Then we got Jason and Greg on board, and it changed completely.”

Within the band’s new configuration, any sound is fair game. Driedzic switches on the radio and loops voices saying “incredibly boring” and “they share cute cat pictures”, phrases which manage to slide between the music seamlessly. They hold onto certain musical lines a little longer than other elements; they are looking to explore these sounds in more depth.

“The good sets are like what we just did,” Hayward says. “They’re balanced in terms of who’s featured, and you’ve got to have a little bit of craziness, but not too much.”

The quartet has a quiet chemistry among themselves. The joy in the band members’ eyes makes me try to think of something that I enjoy doing as much as they enjoy this, but I can’t think of anything. The shy smiles that slip out and broaden and their serious head bopping reveal the pleasure they get from performing sounds that will never be repeated.

“We’re an improvisational ensemble,” Driedzic says. “What you hear won’t be done again.”

At the end of the night, the audience has thinned out a little, but those who stay are treated to a funky track that really showcases the unique style Robot Scout has developed over time.

After about two hours of playing, with a short break in the middle, Driedzic tells us with a laugh, “You don’t have to go home now, but we’re not playing anymore.”

As I head out into the surprisingly warm winter night, I can hear them behind me making plans for the next show.

The psychedelic trance music culture first gained momentum in the UK during the mid-1990s, and it has since expanded to many other countries that host their own dance festivals for devoted fans of this unique genre. Psychedelic music creators layer instrumental melodies over fast-paced, repeating riffs.

They then combine these with various rhythms that result in a style that differs from other forms of electronic music such as industrial or techno.

Various DJs and artists have contributed their own musical signatures to psychedelic trance, which has helped to create sub-genres including dark, techno, and progressive forms of this music. Fans interested in hearing new psychedelic sounds have plenty of choices when it comes to attending an electronic music festival.

Rainbow Serpent

This festival takes place in Western Victoria, Australia during the Southern Hemisphere summer. The 2011 Rainbow Serpent was held from January 21st to the 24th in Melbourne. Ticket prices range from $165 to $225 and grant access to all events and performances over the four days of the festival. While Rainbow Serpent has not previously sold out, it does have a limited capacity of roughly 9,000 to 10,000 people. Tickets can be purchased online or at a few different local Australia retailers a couple of months prior to the festival.

The Rainbow Serpent Festival is not only an electronic music festival; it is also a showcase for visual and performance artists as well as for holistic arts such as yoga, massage, and meditation. A popular feature of the festival is the Lifestyle Village, where visitors can participate in workshops teaching creative art therapy, dance, Qi Gong, and much more.

Psychedelic trance music performances at the Rainbow Serpent Festival take place on a main stage and several secondary stages. The festival’s website has a list of performers with their scheduled times on stage so fans can know when to catch their favorites. The main dance area is called The Playground, which is one of the places to see and be seen at this dynamic festival.

The Indian Spirit dance festival is one that blends psychedelic trance music with cultural influences from traditional Indian culture. This gathering happens once a year in Northern Germany during the first weekend of September. Tickets cost between 40 and 45 Euros, or about $63-$67 USD.
Sonica

The Sonica Dance Festival is a yearly event held in Italy. The 2011 Sonica will take place from the 12th to the 16th of August on the beaches of Montenegro. Tickets are available in advance online for 65 Euros, or $95 USD. The venue has an extensive line-up of well-known psychedelic trance artists performing on both a main stage and an alternative stage. The number of festival attendees can be greater than 10,000 due to the nearly unlimited outer space for this festival. Some artists who perform at this event are known for their mixes of different styles, commonly called “psygressive” musical styling.

Sonica organizers create not only a dance and music festival but also a space for artists to showcase their work. Many avant-garde architecture enthusiasts build intricate temporary structures that are reminders of sculpture work in any art gallery. Performance artists also have opportunities to perform at various times throughout the Sonica Festival.

The healing arts are an additional feature at Sonica; guests have chances to enjoy massages, meditation classes, and yoga seminars. Ecology is a focus of this festival, with workshops dedicated to reducing environmental impact and enjoying green living. Every aspect of the Sonica Festival is designed to leave as little trace as possible and to celebrate the natural world.

BOOM

This popular event is known for its blending of music with diverse visual art and culture from as many different inspirations as possible. The festival is held in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal every other year in late August; it is specifically scheduled according to the cycle of the full moon. Ticket prices start at 130 euros, or $185 USD for the BOOM Festival itself. An additional after-party called After BOOM is an optional inclusion for about $228 total. The festival organizer offer a shuttle bus from major airports to the festival venue for an additional $78, not including an added transaction fee.

The BOOM Festival is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with a maximum capacity of 26,000 guests; the event has sold out in the past as well. Tickets and bus reservations should be made at least a few months ahead. Early ticket sales can be arranged through event coordinators known as BOOM Ambassadors, who can also handle bus reservations on a first come, first served basis. An alternative is to purchase electronic tickets through the BOOM website, though these can often sell out quickly.

Keeping with the spirit of the lakeside surroundings, the psychedelic music at the BOOM Festival often leans toward ambient and easier grooves. Indeed, there is even a dance floor section called the Groovy Beach floor. The focus of the BOOM Festival is to create greater connections between mind, body, and spirit through dancing in large groups for an extended time. Many participants report greater non-verbal connections with others through this practice as well.
